ADOPTED!!!

Hi everyone -- wanted to quickly share this picture of Thelma with her new "brother" and "dad".  Seems dad is very smitten with the girl.  They say she's been swimming in their pool a few times and seems to enjoy it, is learning to trust that nothing bad will happen to her.  She's a very good girl
!

This is Thelma. Louise will have her own web page!!! Go look at it and read their story here.

THELMA:

Hello there -- my name is Thelma.

I was found in the Hermitage area in Tennessee after the big floods on May 2, 2010.

I think I'm about 3-4 years old, probably closer to 4.  I am incredibly sweet and have shown absolutely no signs of aggression towards anyone or anything.

I LOVE CHILDREN.  I'm very gentle and loving and kind.  I do not tear up toys.  I'm a good sized girl, I weigh 91 pounds.  The tear on my nose will probably heal completely.  It got hurt in the flood.  I seem to be good with other dogs except if they challenge me.  I'm very smart.

I don't think I can be trusted with cats or other small animals.  I'm pretty rough and tumble and I love to run and play like I'm 6 months old.  I'm a very good girl.  I don't dig or chew and am very patient about everything.  I do NOT like water, probably I'm scared of it because of the flood waters.  I am very difficult to bathe but in time that will get a lot better as I learn to enjoy the baths more.

From their Guardian Angel who wrote...

Both dogs were spayed two weeks ago.  Both are current on their shots and have been tested for Brucellosis as well.  Their teeth are in beautiful condition.   They are both now in very good weight and they're happy .  They're truly happy dogs.  When I picked them up, every bone in their bodies could be seen.  They were ravenous but extremely sad and exhausted.  Absolutely exhausted.  It took about a week for them to get three regular meals a day before they felt comfortable that they would receive food again and that was when they stopped lunging and leaping for food.  They are both civilized dogs, both good in the house but the baby girl needs some more work -- she is very, let's say, enthusiastic about life.  \

When we picked them up Thelma (the eldest) weighed only 75 pounds and Louise (the baby) was 82 pounds.  These are quite large girls, both are right at 100 pounds now.  They're in beautiful weight, coats shiny but the are absolutely terrified of water.  We assume either they were never bathed in their lives or they had to deal with flood waters (Thelma's belly was scraped up pretty badly) or perhaps both.  It is also quite possible that the girls were from a puppy mill.  Thelma has had a number of litters and little Weezie (as I call her) had at least one.  She's approximately 18 months old.  My vet said her uterus revealed fairly recent implantation sites for two to three puppies.  She was not lactating when we got them.  Thelma is trustworthy in that she won't tear up plush toys or pee in the house.  Weezie as I said is a bit enthusiastic and she has a tendency to pull plush toys apart.  She is very rough and tumble, a very hearty bitch but extremely sweet natured.  There has been absolutely no sign of aggression from either dog with the exception that Weezie became rather upset when my neighbor approached us from across the yard.  My neighbor is a large woman and was wearing sunglasses and carrying a camera.  That seemed to upset the baby for some reason and she was very leery of the woman (who happens to be a wonderful, kind, gentle woman so I don't know what the problem was unless a large woman was her caregiver before.)  Also, we have reason to believe that they were likely kennel dogs and that perhaps someone hosed out their kennels with the dogs still in them.  That would make a lot of sense about the hose water.  I will have to tranquilize them to give them their second baths, the first bath was very traumatic for everyone.

The girls are very good with children.  I believe Thelma can be trusted with small children as she's quite gentle and cautious about where she puts her feet.  Weezie shouldn't have children under the age of 8 and absolutely no cats or small animals (even smaller dogs -- remember, they had to kill everything they ate so they have enormous prey drive.)  Weezie is smart enough to be taught to be careful but she'll need someone with some patience and understanding.  Both girls would be fabulous candidates for rally or obedience.  Thelma is very good on a lead and it has taken me a few weeks to civilize Weezie on a lead but she's actually quite calm while on a lead.  Sweet girls, both love to be cuddled and held, can't seem to get enough of it.  We've been allowing them to play with Nash a bit but he thinks they're ugly so he's been pretty disinterested (I'm laughing.)  They've also had brief encounters with my little bitch Zanadu and that has gone well, they've not shown any aggression towards Zannie either but I won't let them play with her because they are so rough.  You should see how they knock one another around.  It's amazing.  Like the clash of the titans I think!!!!  LOL.

Any help anyone can give me will be greatly appreciated.  I understand that ARC Disaster Relief is asking for donations for both of the girls and that they must go to a fenced yard and that they must be indoor dogs and be allowed to be part of the family.  I don't have a lot of pictures of them but I do have some good head shots.

I love the girls so very much and am now at the point with them that I will worry myself sick over who has them and making sure they're loved and well cared for but it is time for them to go.  I don't like that they have to live in crates in my living room most of the time because my  mother in law lives here.  She's 88 years old, has severe dementia and is very wobbly so the dogs have to be kept away from her -- besides that, she doesn't like dogs, never has.  We let them out to be with us several times a day though and in the evenings, they are allowed to play in the living room while we watch TV.  They're eating me out of house and home!!!
They deserve forever homes with families.  Thelma would be a great dog for a retiree.
