THIS IS OUR SPECIAL MOVIE STAR   "CATHY"

Cathy had fallen into a canal and had to be gotten out.  She was taken to Animal Control.  We were called to come and see her.  Following are excerpts from e-mails from Grace (our club president that can tell the story far better than anything else.

I am tired, very. But I must tell you her story.

Animal Planet has been filming at the Miami Dade Shelter since June. AC got a call of an abandoned Rottweiler near Homestead.  AP went to the area to film here rescue by the AC officers (just like the show with the NY Cops).

When AP got there she was trying to drink from a canal and she fell in the canal.  She ended inside a huge drainage drum.  A man jumped in the canal to try to save her and was able to pull her out.  All of this in film.

Her rescue was Monday, Sept. 15.  On Wed. Sept 17 I received a call from AP asking if we could adopt her out of the shelter.  The appointment to pick her up and film her adoption was made for Thurs. Sept 18 at 6 PM.

I called Marlen Valle and asked her if she could come with me. Of course, she said YES.  She has always been with me when I needed her.

On Thurs. I got a call from AP telling me the dog was of a mix breed.  I told AP that we could not adopt her if she was not a purebred Rottweiler.  I almost canceled our trip to the shelter at that point.   Remember that I work all day and at that time of the day the traffic is a big hassle.

Something told me to go as planned.  When Marlen and I arrived at the shelter's parking lot, the AP crew was waiting for us.  I was fitted with a tiny microphone to tape all my comments.  They asked us to drive the van as if we were arriving while they were filming.  They filmed Marlen and I walking in the shelter, saying hello to the people there and walking through the shelter up to this poor girl's run.

I had explained to the reporter why I could not take a mix as I had several at my home and it was very hard for me to place these dogs.  She understood.  And so, we kept walking, not knowing what we were going to see.

Marlen and I were shocked to see this poor girl WAS A PUREBRED ROTT.
If we had canceled our trip, she probably would have not been adopted.  And I will tell you why.

She was in a long run that it is divided by a dropping metal plate.  The plate door is dropped  down when the workers want to confine a dog to one side while the other side is cleaned.  On the floor dividing both sides was another metal plate.  The girl was in the far inside part of the kennel and she was not responding to our loving calls.

A woman came with the key to the run's lock and a nylon leash.
She began to cross to the side where the dog was but as doing so, she stepped on the metal plate making a huge noise.  The girl freaked out big time!!!  She became very aggressive.  Of course, the woman froze and was not thinking of crossing the barrier.  I took the leash and jumped the metal plate.  I was inside with the dog.   This dog was so scared to see me close, she peed and pooped!
and... SHE SHOWED ME ALL HER TEETH!!!

Remember, AP was filming all of this.

I roped her with the leash and she grabbed it in her mouth. I knew exactly what she was doing and I said out loud,  "watch, watch... she is cutting the leash with her teeth."  Surely, it took her only seconds and she was freed again. SHOWING TEETH AND GROWLING at me.

I asked for another leash.  This time I roped her and held the leash high on top of her neck.  No way she was going to bite it this time.  I was able to bring her out to the front of her run.

Once at the door of her run, I began to pet her on her rear, while I had her tight on the leash.  She began to trust me and minutes later, I was giving her a kiss.

From that moment on, she trusted me.  We walked the hallways of the shelter, and went to my van.  Marlen opened the back door and she jumped right in.
The camera man was livid, he could not believe how easy it was once this girl trusted in us.

When I asked the girl to come out of my van again, and she saw me walking her to the shelter, her eyes were saddened.  I knew it.  I knew it, she probably thought I was abandoning her again.

I was promised she would be spayed on Saturday morning.  It was fine, I knew we have club members who could pick her up after her surgery.  Several members volunteered, but it was YOLY who went to the shelter and then brought her to my home.

I said to Yoly, "Please, Yoly, be very careful.  Go slow with her. She is a scared little soul".

Yoly called me, I was in Columbus, Indiana.  Her report was fantastic. This girl, now named CATHY, was a real mellow girl.  She was very sweet and affectionate.  What a relief!

Animal Planet wants to continue with her story and wants to visit Cathy at my home.  I will take pictures when I can, but the next two days are going to be awful for me.  Tues. and Wed. nights I have to go back to school.  It will probably be Thurs. before I take her pictures.

I am very happy knowing she is SAFE.
Animal planet then made another trip to the Acosta Hotel (a pet name we have for Grace's house)
Following is Grace's update of that day

Yesterday, Animal Planet came to the Acosta Motel and it WAS AN EXCELLENT FILMING OF CATHY.

When is it going to be aired?  The program will be called  MIAMI COPS.. or MIAMI ANIMAL COPS.. something like it.   It is scheduled to begin on January 5, 2004.

All they are doing now is filming lots of rescue, sick animals, dog fights, bites, etc.

When our piece is aired, we will be notified and I will let everyone know.

Now, lets find a home for her.  Animal Planet wants to continue the filming until Cathy is her new home.

UPDATE - CATHY IN HER NEW HOME - 12-08-03

Read the email for her fairy tale ending and see the picture to see how happy she is

Hi Catherine,

Here's an update on "Cathy" now known as "Hannah".  I've attached a picture that was taken on 6 December.  Hannah is doing great!  She is such a sweetheart!  She's better behaved than Scooby!  I try to take them for a walk each day.  She does very well on a leash and I don't have a problem walking them on two separate leashes.  She's finally building up her endurance for our walks.  The first time I took her for a walk, I didn't think she was going to make it.  Her belly has firmed up a lot.  She and Scooby play good together, although they can get a little rough at times.  I will send Grace an update.  Oh, have you heard when Animal Planet will be airing the show of when Hannah was rescued?

Talk to you later.
