Lazarus' story:

Lazarus came to the rescue from Hernando County Animal Control on Good Friday. He and another dog were picked up after being reported as strays by local residents.

Upon intake to Animal Control, Lazarus was labeled as rescue only. He had a 4 inch hole in the side of his lower left chest. A section of skin had been torn away revealing the muscle and tissue below. Inside the wound the damage was more extensive. Most of the skin on the left hand side of his chest had been "de-gloved" from the underlying tissue. The wound field was so large that four drains had to be installed to facilitate drainage of fluids that would otherwise accumulate in the days and weeks following the surgery. Our talented vet at Hays Town Veterinary Hospital, Dr Kerri, was skillfully able to suture the wound closed and provided excellent aftercare over the following weeks.

Lazarus is approximately 2 years old and tips the scales at just over 100 pounds. He has a fantastic temperament and despite his injuries he is great with adults and children he's met so far. He exhibits no food or toy guarding/aggression with humans, but has shown mild toy and food guarding with other dogs. He knows a few basic commands (sit and down) but needs a bit of leash work. He takes treats gently and allows you to take toys/bones from his mouth.

He's been introduced to several dogs since going into foster and has been friendly with them after proper introduction.

During the coming weeks he will be socialized with mpre dogs and cat tested.

Lazarus has almost fully recovered from his initial wounds. He will be scheduled to have his remaining veting down in the next couple of weeks.

He should be available for adoption in May. Check back frequently for updates on his progress.
